A couple of months ago i stumbled across a lesser known Canadian four-piece named Women. Despite the band name Women is made up of four entirely masculine members; Patrick Flegel, Matthew Flegel, Michael Wallace and Christopher Reimer.
Describing Women's sound became a difficulty as I discovered more and more of their music, finally climaxing in my first album purchase for some time, their eponymous debut effort released on Jagjaguar Records.
I've seen in their music echoes of earlier 60's surf tunes, and in equal measure hard edged ambient melody, noise and unusual execution that can be likened to modern americ/canad avant-pop bands, ( 'Crystal Antlers' springs to mind, and to an extent 'Why?'.) It often seems that their songs cram in as many influences and ideas as radio friendly time sensibilities will allow.
But what sets Women apart is their ability to keep the message of their song writing clear where others fall into over instrumentation and orginised chaos. A sense of simplicity is seen in complex time signatures and sonics, heartfelt meaning can be found in the most baffling of lyrics, lazy and confident efforts in Patrick's whining vocals.
Check them out, I'd of course recommend Black Rice, possibly their strongest song writing effort so far (and most recognised track) in their short lived existence, but Shaking Hand will provide the more open-minded listener with real reward.
